Fourth Degree (Patriotic Degree) Information

The Patriotic Degree, also known as the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, is the highest degree of the Order and is centered on the principle of Patriotism. It challenges Catholic gentlemen to deepen their commitment to Christ by faithfully serving their Church, their communities, and their country.

The Fourth Degree is not simply another level of membership—it is a call to greater leadership, public witness, and sacrificial service. A Sir Knight is expected to lead by example, demonstrating integrity, charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism in every aspect of his life.

Mission

The mission of the Patriotic Degree is to inspire Catholic men to:

• Live their faith openly and courageously.

• Defend religious liberty and the dignity of every human life.

• Promote responsible citizenship rooted in Christian values.

• Serve as visible ambassadors of the Catholic faith.

• Support bishops, priests, parishes, and civic communities.

• Preserve the traditions and heritage of the Knights of Columbus.

What Makes the Fourth Degree Different?

Unlike the first three degrees, which focus primarily on council life and charitable service, the Fourth Degree emphasizes public witness.

Sir Knights represent the Order at civic and religious events, demonstrating that faithful Catholics are active participants in building stronger communities and a stronger nation.

The Color Corps

The Color Corps is the ceremonial arm of the Patriotic Degree and participation is entirely voluntary.

Color Corps members wear the traditional regalia inspired by historic naval dress uniforms. The ceremonial sword symbolizes Christian knighthood and represents respect for:

• Christ

• The Eucharist

• The Catholic Church

• Country

• Freedom

Their presence adds dignity, reverence, and solemnity to Catholic liturgies and patriotic ceremonies.

Leadership Opportunities

The Fourth Degree provides opportunities for members to develop leadership while serving at the local, district, provincial, and state levels.

Best Practices for a Thriving Assembly

Successful Assemblies share several common characteristics:

Faith First

• Encourage regular Mass attendance.

• Support parish liturgies and diocesan events.

• Promote Eucharistic devotion and prayer.

Build Strong Relationships

• Maintain close communication with pastors, bishops, council officers, and diocesan leadership.

• Foster unity among all local councils.

Active Color Corps

• Maintain a well-trained and dependable Color Corps.

• Ensure proper protocol, uniform standards, and ceremonial excellence.

• Welcome and mentor new members.

Continuous Membership Growth

• Invite every eligible Third Degree Knight to join the Fourth Degree.

• Conduct regular informational sessions.

• Personally mentor prospective Sir Knights.

Leadership Development

• Identify and prepare future Assembly officers.

• Encourage participation in training and state meetings.

• Delegate responsibilities to build future leaders.

Community Engagement

• Participate in civic celebrations and veteran recognition events.

• Support military families, first responders, and patriotic organizations.
